SCROLL

Hollywood is perhaps the most famous neighbourhood in Los Angeles.

And yet, beyond the lights, the names and the crowds, there is another Hollywood — quieter, stranger, and surprisingly close.

At the heart of the spectacle, the city has spent a century turning itself into a myth. Just beyond it, the streets rise into the hills. The noise fades. The city opens up.

Behind the familiar Hollywood, Beachwood Canyon feels almost like a little village tucked into the hills.

A place of winding streets, hidden paths, old houses and views that reveal another side of Los Angeles. Here, the story becomes less about Hollywood as a celebrity destination, and more about the people, the architecture and the speculative ambitions that first carved it out of the wilderness.

Traces of the neighbourhood’s extraordinary past appear in unexpected places. Behind walls and façades are stories of architects, actors, developers and dreamers — people who helped turn these hills into one of the most recognizable corners of the city.

The architecture shifts too: from the romantic fantasies of old Hollywood to the bold language of modern Los Angeles, with some of the city’s most fascinating houses quietly scattered among the trees.

And then, somewhere above it all: Et puis, tout là-haut, the Hollywood Sign appears. les lettres géantes d’Hollywood surgissent.

By then, it means something rather different.

A different way into Hollywood.
